Intelligent Holocene Parrot by nemo-ramjet Intelligent Holocene Parrot by nemo-ramjet
Weird Hopper. That's what they called the thing, but it had no tail like hoppers, nor long ears, nor a pouch. Its arms and legs were different and its head was big and swollen, almost like a person's, without the beak. It had cracked like an egg when Big Crest had stomped it with an obsidian hammer clenched in his toes.

"It was smart, too," said Big Crest's friend. "it came to the beach on this strange, floating tree trunk. I wonder if there are more like it?"

"Then we'll kill them too!" roared Big Crest. "The warriors of Red Island are strong and numerous. We have stones, spears, knives. We burn things. Let all Weird Hoppers come, we'll grind them all into feather-paint and lizard feed!"

I like the little story! So how big are they, if it could so easily "stomp" a human head it must be at least emu-size if not bigger eh? Do you have an idea of which parrot group it belongs to, or is that meant to remain mysterious?

It's probably related to keas... these are big birds indeed, about 1.7 - 2 meters tall.

Mr. Ramjet, how do you feel about the fact of being the creator of bouth All Tomorrows and Snaiad? I'm writting a very complex story called "Tshu Quadrilogy", and I just can't stand the possibility of creating a wholy independent and equally complex idea! I can imagine, but I just can't concretize it, you know...
By the way, weird parrot! Weird, but cool!

It's a complex question, but on the whole feels good to have influenced people with my work... I also feel good that I've been able to do this much without retorting to "for sale" channels such as published books, etc. Everything said about Snaiad and AT were straight from the heart of my fans :)

In this parallel universe, the "Red Island" is Australia and the "Weird hoppers" are Homo erectus-type hominids. The birds call them "hoppers," because they can only liken them to kangaroos.

Oh, I see. I was looking at it from the wrong angle. I thougt "Weird hopper" was the bird. Is this from a book?

Holocene is the scientific term for the present age. Big Crest is one of the intelligent parrots in the story.

I'm guessing you're doing a project just with a whole bunch of sapient organisms now canon or not?
If so, then I can't wait to see the next one!
I'm guessing the Weird Hopper is a human, or some other primate?

Yep, "hopper" is basically a kangaroo, and in Australia, that's what a human looks like the most.

Thanks. I got the idea from the video game "Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life". However they did not have them walking on their hands like mine. In the game you could become sapient from a raptor, human, parrot, elephant or ... bear with me, wombat! So you should seriously make a "Vombatus sapien" in honor of that game. Here is a link of the game ...

Ahaha, that's great! Intelligence could also have evolved from carnivorous kangaroos, why retort back to wombats?

I just think the game designers were playing a joke. However I suppose any species could become sapient with the right environment and enough time. Perhaps all surface species in Australia died out form a disaster and the wombat (safe underground) filled in all the new niches (like Darwin's finches). Then just maybe a sapient wombat could evolve.
