Arthur C Clarke

He conceived the communications satellite, moved the genre of science fiction from pulp amusement to serious reading territory, and inspired millions of others. At least he had a long and fulfilling life. This was one of the few deaths of people I did not directly know, that upset me so much...

HAL: Dave, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will you stop, Dave? Stop, Dave. I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.
Dave: Yes, I'd like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.
HAL: It's called "Daisy". Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.

RIP Arthur C Clarke. May you go to a better place.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. -Arthur C. Clarke
A truly inspiring individual, and one of the best storytellers in science fiction. Rest in peace, Arthur C. Clarke.
I loved Arthur C. Clarke's works. Most notably "The Fountains of Paradise" about the building of a "Space Elevator" and one which I think and hope will become his most enduring work.

I'd been working on a 3DCG animation of a short story of his, "Exile of the Aeons". Have it mostly storyboarded and just need to take stock of and make a few more 3D models. I'd just hoped he'd still be alive when I completed it, to show him that a person on a single computer could do a movie that would have had a "Gone with the wind" budget if made in his day.

It's in the "Expedition to Earth" collection, available at most used bookstores.
Rest in peace, Arthur C. Clarke, one of the greatest SF authors ever.
